Fall Panel: Startup 2.0; Building and Growing a Startup in Today's Economy Oct 09th, 2008
In the last five years there has been a marked shift in the way technology startups get off the ground and grow their business. Ranging from the new options for entrepreneurial companies to develop and get products to market to the way new ventures are financed, the startup environment has seen significant evolution. The recent economic turbulence will also radically alter how small companies survive and grow. In addition to the recent rapid
deterioration of the macroeconomic situation, the new environment for startups include:
1) Access to cost effective global talent and resources 2) New efficient technologies like open source, cloud computing and, 3) Innovative distribution and revenue models as exemplified by companies like Salesforce, Facebook, Google and Linkedin.
In the past, companies first had to raise millions of dollars to build, market and sell their product while today it is possible to launch a product or service with a fraction of the
cost and with the ability to directly gain access to customers. In this panel discussion, we will meet with VC's and entrepreneurs to learn from their experiences working with and starting entrepreneurial ventures in this new environment and will discuss the lessons for those considering starting or joining startups. We will further explore what elements in this new paradigm represent a permanent and significant shift versus those that may be overhyped or temporary and what specific industries are affected most by this paradigm shift.
